Notes for Ramblers

Maps are available from the Rambles Secretary to leaders of rambles. The maps should be returned as soon as possible after the ramble.

It is important that disputed rights of way, ploughed paths, and any deliberate obstruction of public footpaths should be reported to the Rambles Secretary.

Leaders And Backmarkers

Any appointed leader, or backmarker, who becomes unavailable at the date of the ramble must arrange a substitute and notify the Joint Rambles Secretary of the substitution. The Committee strongly advise the Leaders to make a full reconnoitre and assessment of the walk allocated to them.

Dogs should not be taken on Rambles or Ambles.

On coach journeys members are requested to leave the four pairs of front seats (8 seats) free for the Rambles Secretaries, Leaders of the day and their partners, if applicable.

In order to ensure that our rambles are a pleasant experience for all walkers and leaders, members should follow these general guidelines.

1.         Please ensure that you do not walk in front of the leader, unless authorised to do so. Anyone who walks away in any other direction will be deemed to have left the walk.

2.         Do not stray behind the ‘back-marker’.This is very important in woodland areas, where it is easy to become isolated from the main party.

3.         At a change of direction, eg junctions of footpaths, look back to make sure that the walkers following you know which way the main party has gone.

4.         It is a very rare event for anyone to become detached from the group and lost.If this occurs, the following procedure is to be carried out:

Attempt to regain contact by blowing a whistle or shouting.

If contact cannot be made, use a mobile phone if possible, or walk to the nearest dwelling. Telephone the coach driver or the police and inform them of your whereabouts. In this way, contact can be re-established.

5.         When road walking the party should walk in single file on the right hand side of the road, facing the oncoming traffic, unless it is judged by the leader dangerous to do so

6.         Leave gates as you find them. The leader will pass a message to the back-marker if a gate needs closing.

7.         Do not walk more than two abreast when crossing ploughed fields.

8.         Take all your litter home.

9.         In the event of an accident during the walk the Leader, in conjunction with the Backmarker, will take charge and make all arrangements necessary, including completion of an accident report form, which should be handed to the Rambles Secretary and kept in Club records. Under no circumstances should other members interfere or question the decision made by the Leader and Backmarker

10.       In case of accident or illness all walkers are advised to carry some form of identification, an emergency contact number and any relevant medical details.
